How we calculate your take home pay

Every figure on this site comes from the same calculation engine. This page explains exactly what goes in, what we assume, and where the numbers come from.

What the calculator does

You enter your gross annual salary. The engine then works out:

  • Income tax, using the personal allowance and the tax bands for your region
  • Employee National Insurance
  • Student loan repayments, if you have a loan plan
  • Pension contributions, with salary sacrifice or relief at source

The result is your estimated take home pay, shown yearly, monthly and weekly.

Our sources

All rates and thresholds come from official UK sources:

  • HMRC income tax rates and allowances
  • GOV.UK student loan repayment thresholds
  • The Scottish Government budget for Scottish tax bands

We recheck every rate each April when the new tax year starts, and we stamp each page with its last reviewed date.

What we assume

To keep results clear, the calculator uses a standard case unless you change the settings:

  • Tax code 1257L with the full personal allowance of £12,570
  • England, Wales or Northern Ireland tax bands, unless you pick Scotland
  • No Blind Person’s Allowance or other adjustments

If your tax code is different, your real payslip may differ slightly. The calculator is an estimate, not financial advice.

Accuracy promise

We test the engine against worked examples every tax year. If you ever spot a figure that looks wrong, tell us through the contact page and we will fix it.
